This is the latest project from Soul City Arts where the public are invited to enter an immersive arts installation, guided by a host. They will get to experience a cave setting along with soundscapes replicating the feeling of being isolated away from modern city-life. It will take place at ‘Port Hope’ –an arts centre in the heart of Sparkbrook, Birmingham.

Visitors will experience the cave through two curated experiences. During the day there will be regular opportunities to enter the installation as a group. By night a limited number of extended experiences will be available for a group of visitors to stay overnight.

Audiences who stay overnight are asked to hand over their phones as well as any watches, resulting in being unable to tell whether it is night or day or how much time has passed.

Audience Advisory: 13+

This show is recommended for audiences aged 13 and older due to the nature of the experience, (loud sounds, darkness etc) and ,may not be suitable for younger participants. For any school/ extra curricular groups we have a tailored version of the experience for ages 6 plus to ensure we can cater for larger groups of younger people. We kindly request that parents/carers use their discretion when deciding if this performance is appropriate. For overnight stays we require participants to be 18+.

Artist Mohammed Ali has taken inspiration from the story of the Seven Sleepers which features in the remaining fragments of the famous ‘Birmingham Qur’an’. Discovered to be one of the oldest in the world, the manuscript is housed at the University of Birmingham at the Cadbury Research Library. ‘Sleepers’ has been supported by the University as part of ‘Qur’an In The City’, through their Culture Forward initiative.

Dates for the installation are as follows:

September 27th – October 1st: Night visits will take place for groups of up to seven people. Visitors are invited to register as a group to sleepover for one night. These night visits will start at 8pm and run though until 8am.

October 2nd – October 6th: Daytime visits for communities and schools will take place for groups of up to 20 people. The experience will last approximately 30-45 minutes with time to sit and reflect.
