Ramadan Streets is a five-day cultural event and night market that welcomes people of all backgrounds to come together and experience the community-spirit of Ramadan. Taking place during March 12-16th, from dusk until midnight, it takes place in an empty car park in Coventry Road, Birmingham, with an opportunity for the community to break their fast together.

Thoughtfully designed to foster comfort and inclusivity, working in close collaboration with Birmingham City Council, Ramadan Streets offers an opportunity for those of all background to experience street-food favourites from smash burgers to corn-dogs. Visitors can expect a souk experience with 40 stalls selling food, crafts, art and other artisan goods featuring well established vendors as well as local businesses.

The event is curated by artist Mohammed Ali along with his creative team at Soul City Arts and supported by The Halal Food Festival. Soul City Arts, have delivered art festivals and events locally, nationally and internationally and partners from The Halal Food Festival have been behind large-scale food festivals in Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester and Glasgow. Artistic lead Mohammed Ali, has also created a series of films entitled Ramadan Diarieswhich will be showcased during the event, where the community speaks on reflections of Ramadan, which will be projected directly onto the walls overlooking the car park at night.

Ramadan is a sacred month dedicated to fasting, prayer, and contemplation for Muslims. Increasingly Iftars and the spirit of Ramadan have brought people together, regardless of faith or background.

The event has been commissioned by Soul City Arts through the UK Government Community Recovery Small Grant Fund and supported by Councillor Saima Suleman and Birmingham City Council.

During the month of Ramadan, people come together for prayers and to eat together at the end of a fasting day in mosques, homes, and restaurants. We’’ve tried to create a safe outdoor space that is inspiring and welcoming to all” says Mohammed Ali.

Councillor Saima Suleman, the Cabinet Member for Digital, Culture, Heritage and Tourism at Birmingham City Council said: “Ramadan Streets is an exciting cultural event interlinking faith, culture and community in celebration of the holy month of Ramadan.

“Working alongside partners and the team of Soul City Arts, Birmingham City Council are delighted to be supporting the delivery of this event through the UK Government Community Recovery Small Grant Fund. This weeklong programme of community led activities, which includes the Ramadan Diaries video series, is a wonderful opportunity for communities and residents across Birmingham to safely come together and in marking the month of Ramadan.”

Ramadan Streets takes place from 5.30pm until Midnight on March 12th-16th 2024.
